PROJECTS.
SEA YOU THERE.
‘SEA YOU THERE’ questions our future relationship with the ocean, focusing on how we would live alongside the water. The project began by observing the environment itself; collecting materials found on the beach as well as walking and swimming within the waters. ‘Desktop’ research was fundamental; starting with our past relationships with the water (trade, literature, exploration) and then exploring the ocean in contemporary context (science, art instillations, ceramics). Through this I began to understand that the narrative is largely characterised by our fear of the ocean; we do not know what lies in her depths, are at awe with her power, and fear the threats possed by climate change.
To move away from this relationship I speculated what kind of suit we would require to live in a world where the ocean would be integrated into our daily lives. By focusing on materiality (recycled sails) and form, the project reflects on our history but also peers into possible sustainable futures with the ocean.
